Living at Erwin Home
FAQs
Can any woman become a resident?
There are only two restrictions mandated by Mr. Erwin's will: you must have connections to the greater New Britain area in order to become a resident, and you must be able to care for yourself as long as you remain a resident.
How long can I stay at The Erwin?
Some of our residents have lived here for decades. Others stay for a year or two. As long as you meet the residence criteria of The Erwin, you may remain as long as you like.
Will I fit in?
Unquestionably. Erwin residents range in age from 18 to 78, represent virtually every religion, race and nationality imaginable, and pursue virtually every interest under the sun.
How much rent will I pay?
The Erwin strives to maintain the lowest rental rates possible in keeping with our mission. However each resident's rent is set individually, and based solely on ability to pay.
What else do I have to pay for?
In addition to rent, you are expected to pay your own electrical and heating bills, for your own food, clothing and furnishings, and for options like cable TV and parking, if you use them.
Can my family and friends visit me?
From 8 to 6 every single day, if you like. You may not have overnight guests in your apartment, but guestrooms are available to overnight or short-term guests for a reasonable fee.
Does the Erwin have a lot of rules?
Just 4 important ones:
- You must be able to care for yourself and your apartment while you live here. This is very important - The Erwin's staff is not allowed to help you with nursing, medications or medically related transportation.
- All outside doors must be kept locked at all times, and you may not give a key to the building or to your apartment to any other person for any reason.
- Each resident is scheduled and required as part of her rental agreement to perform receptionist duty in the main lobby for two (2) hours each week.
- No men are allowed in your apartment overnight -- this is part of Mr. Erwin's will - but there are guest apartments available for male guests.
Can I keep my car?
Yes. Parking at the owner's risk is provided at the rear of the Home for your cars. The Erwin also maintains two vans for the convenience of its residents.
Does the Erwin allow smoking?
No. The Erwin is a 100% smoke-free facility. In the interest of community harmony, pets are not allowed, either.
How big will my apartment be?
All apartments include an unfurnished bedroom, living room, bathroom and small kitchen with range and refrigerator, as well as a locked storage area in the cellar.
